About the Opportunity
We are recruiting a Lead Hand – Red Seal Truck and Transport Mechanic on behalf of a premier commercial transportation operator in Halifax, NS. Operating a top-tier, modern fleet across Eastern Canada, our client continues to expand its scheduled, charter, and specialized transit divisions.As the Lead Hand Mechanic, you will serve as the senior working technician in the shop. You will blend hands-on diagnostics and heavy repair work with daily operational leadership—guiding shop floor priorities, mentoring apprentices, and ensuring peak fleet reliability and safety standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Technical Leadership: Perform complex diagnostics, electrical troubleshooting, and heavy mechanical repairs on heavy-duty commercial transport vehicles, buses, and support equipment.
- Shop Coordination & Mentorship: Guide day-to-day workflow, assist technicians with complex repairs, and coach apprentices on industry best practices and safe work protocols.
- Safety & Regulatory Compliance: Conduct inspections and preventive maintenance in accordance with provincial commercial vehicle standards; ensure all repair documentation is accurate and complete.
- Operational Readiness: Coordinate with parts inventory, assist with shop process improvements, and support occasional emergency after-hours breakdown calls as part of a scheduled rotation.
Qualifications & Requirements
- Certification: Active Red Seal Truck & Transport Mechanic license (310T or provincial equivalent).
- Driver’s License: Valid driver’s license (Class 2 or Class 3 with Air Brake / 'Z' endorsement considered a strong asset).
- Experience: 5+ years of progressive heavy-duty truck, coach, or bus mechanical repair experience.
- Leadership Skills: Proven ability to organize workflow, prioritize tasks under operational deadlines, and mentor junior technicians or apprentices.
- Technical Proficiency: Strong electrical, hydraulic, and computerized diagnostic skills on modern diesel and fleet platforms.
Compensation & Benefits Package
- Base Rate: $45.00 / hour + On-Call Premiums & Overtime opportunities.
