JOB SEEKERS:

Job Search Tips:

Working with an Employment Agency:

  • You should always ensure that the agency you are signing up with is in good standing with the Better Business Bureau.
  • Be specific about the kind of work you are looking for, and be honest about your availability and skill level. Your resume should include all information pertinent to the position you are applying for.
  • Keep the agency updated with any changes to your availability, contact information, or any new certifications you have obtained.
  • After submitting a resume, you should contact the agency to ensure they have received your information and that it was sent in the appropriate format.

The Interview Process:

  • Research the company – arm yourself with as much information as possible.
  • Go over commonly asked questions in interviews so you can answer them confidently.
  • Arrive 10-15 minutes early.
  • Dress appropriately for the job you are interviewing for.
  • Always come with extra copies of your resume, and your references.
  • Practice giving a firm, confident handshake – never shake with both hands – this suggests a familiarity that has not yet been established.
  • Maintain eye contact.
  • Ask the employer questions.
  • Thank the interviewer when you are leaving.
  • Ask when you should expect a follow up to the interview, and ask for a business card.

Commonly Asked Interview Questions:

  • What do you know about the company/position?
  • Why do you want to work for this company/why are you interested in this position?
  • What job skills do you have that are relevant to the position?
  • Why do you want to leave your current position?
  • Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
  • Tell me about a time when you had a situation…
  • What are the most important qualities you look for in an employer?

Resume Tips:

  • Be honest.
  • Be concise, but length of your resume is not important as long as it contains only pertinent information.
  • CAREFULLY check your resume for grammar and spelling errors, and do not rely on spell check to catch all your mistakes. Sometimes a second pair of eyes helps.
  • Be as specific as possible when listing strengths/attributes. Proof of your strength (ie percentages, sales records) is a definite asset on your resume.
  • Use a good quality paper, or if sending your resume via email, always send as a WORD document.
